News Values

Immediacy: has it happened recently?
With social networking sites you can now find out the news instantly. So Twitter for e.g. lets you find out news straight away as a tweet gets sent in seconds.

Familiarity: is it culturally close to us in Britain?
Because we are researching local newspapers the majority of the news will be about the borough we live in unless there is breaking national news or even sometimes world wide news.

Amplitude Is it a big event? Does it involve many people?
If it is a big event it will most likely be seen and tweeted by people on twitter. There could be a popular hashtag going around which could be on the top 10 trends. Even now on snapchat with snapchat live it allows people to see the big events happening in the world such a big worldwide concerts for e.g.

Frequency: did the event happen fairly quickly?
if it happened on the day. It would be on online and on twitter straight but newspapers would post about it the next day.

Unambiguity: is it clear and definite?
Newspapers have the tendency to not reveal certain stories if they think that they are too difficult to explain, local newspapers may also adopt this same principle.

Taylor Swift tells fans she's 'watching closely' after UK iTunes unrest

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/oct/15/taylor-swift-uk-itunes-out-of-the-woods

The Article talks about how the UK public have reacted and how Taylor Swift has took on the fact that her new single is out everywhere except the UK .

Taylor Swift says Out of the Woods has deliberately been held back in the UK iTunes Store.
  • In a Tumblr post, Swift confirmed that this was no accident: in fact, it’s a deliberate marketing strategy by her record label.
  • Out of the Woods is likely to be available for at least some of Swift’s fans in the UK soon
  • It is relatively rare to see songs made available to buy on iTunes in some countries but not other major music markets like the UK
My Opinion is that this shouldn't happen and it is bad for Taylor Swift because the UK has one of the biggest music markets in the world and for the single not to be out in the UK is very unprofessional for her and her label.

Build the wall analysis

Section 1:
This section discusses the Washington Post and the New York Times and whether they are doing good with their audience facing paywall.

Section 2:

This section discusses the likelihood of the times moving to a paywall thats actually working.

Section 3:

This section talks about the drop in the industry and it's reasons.

Section 4:

The effects if The Times and The Post were to move to an online basis.

The main point of this article is the issues of newspapers and how they may be more successful if they were to add an online paywall to their websites as this may be the only way how journalists get paid. The article also outlines the likelihood of a paywall actually working if the quality of newspaper is increased.

Commenting On Comments

"The Morton Plan would have kicked in on July 4 but newspapers across the country couldn't get it together by then. Why do newspapers drag their feet? They have seen the future and still they hesitate. "

I agree with as newspapers need to realise that they will not survive by not doing anything and take action straight away.

"I will never pay for news again. Most news is not truly news - it is sensationalism, hype and deception. Most news is not balanced - every editor is biased. And it is not just that - I truly can not afford to pay for news."

Newspapers need to ensure they are not charging more than they should for their content.

"The proof is that while online aggregation and free newspaper Web sites have combined to batter paid print circulation figures, more people are reading the product of America’s newspapers than ever before."

I can infer that this person feels that there is still demand for physical newspapers.

I believe that for journalists they all need to use a pay wall online because only some are getting paid but the firms should find a way to get them all paid.
