NDM : News on the tweet

Why are respected news brands good news for Twitter?
Brands with twitter are good for twitter as it gives the site some reputability and trust to the audience. This is important if twitter wants to be a credible news source and keep gaining users.

Why in turn is Twitter good for respected news brands?
It allows Brands to reach more users than before. This means when users go on their online page they will see the advertisement on page. Therefore this means that revenue will go up.

The report suggests that old and new media “are not, in fact, in direct competition, but often work extremely well together to enhance both the media eco-system and the consumer experience”. What evidence do they provide to support this idea? Do you agree with it?
I believe that old and new digital media working together is beneficial to the consumer as they can have connected digital conversation or experience and are not torn between what they should choose to have it on.Twitter users can experience an enhanced consumer experience for example one of the ways this can happen is through gossips or create a meme trend. A viewer of a TV show may find something funny and tweet it to twitter that will join in the laughter and will create their own version or be involved in the conversation

On page 24/25 of the report, the focus turns to gossip or banter. What example tweets from journalists are used to illustrate this?

  • Kim Kardashians attempt to "break the internet"
  • Steven Gerrard slips and gives away the premier league title to Man City
  • Germany beating Brazil 7-1 at the World Cup
  • Disappearance of Malaysia Airlines MH 370
Do you think the increasing amount of gossip or banter is harming the reputation of news and journalists?
I think the increasing amount of gossip is helping news and journalists understand what's going on more online.

What does the report say about trust in Twitter and journalists (look at pages 34-39)?
It says "Almost half of all Twitter users, and almost two thirds of newsbrand users, say it is important that news on Twitter is verified by a respected brand. This helps build trust in the content."

Finally, do you think new and digital media developments such as Twitter have had a positive or negative impact on traditional newspapers?

Well traditional newspapers are slowly dying out but they are making the same money that they used to make but his time - online.
People do check newspapers site for the news but the company really gets a big push when Twitter users find their stories with a link.

News Corp UK suffers £3.5m loss after £51m profit the year before

Murdoch
http://www.theguardian.com/media/greenslade/2014/dec/17/news-corp-uk-suffers-35m-loss-after-51m-profit-the-year-before
News corp UK has suffered devastating losses. This is not surprising as many of the demand for news has moved online and the ever-growing popularity of twitter has meant the means in which news is accessed is also changing from traditional print to digital. This has had a predictable knock on effect on newspapers as evident by this article.

Digital journalists have great chance to develop much-needed transparency

digital journalism

This article is about Digital media outlets can improve the quality of journalism by using new tools such as the CSI-style verification of social media posts and by allowing the reader not only to comment but to correct articles

Far from the internet destroying quality journalism, digital has given the media lots of new tools to improve it, Riordan says in her study, Accuracy, independence, and impartiality: How legacy media and digital natives approach standards in the digital age.

This article looks on how the news articles online are now allowing for users to edit them. This questions the role of a journalist as multiple people are allowed to edit articles. I think that this could make bigger companies like BBC to improve the quality of their articles as they do not have to worry or be careful of it that much compared to all the other news outlets

Microsoft and Yahoo respond to European 'right to be forgotten' requests

Bing and Yahoo have joined Google in responding to 'right to be forgotten' requests.
http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/dec/01/microsoft-yahoo-right-to-be-forgotten

This article is about Yahoo and Microsoft’s Bing search engine have begun responding to “right to be forgotten” requests for search result deletions in Europe, joining Google.
  • “There have been 699 demands for ‘search engine result’ removal requests on Bing handled via Forget
  •  since the 23rd of July, representing a total of 2 362 URLs. So far, 79 requests have received an answer from Bing,” explained the company.
  • Bing published its request form in July, but the first removals have now taken place according to reputation management firm Reputation VIP’s Forget.me site, which helps people submit requests.
I think that the right to be forgotten campaign is a great thing as users of the internet will fill more secure in the future and less of people can know who you are with just a click.

YouTubers ads for Oreo banned for not making clear purpose of videos

http://www.theguardian.com/media/2014/nov/26/youtube-ad-oreo-banned-advertising-lick-race

A campaign for Oreo featuring a host of British YouTube stars has been banned by the advertising watchdog for not clearly telling the public their videos were ads, following a complaint from a BBC journalist.
This article basically sums up how a journalist thought that there were a number of people who were trying to promote the Oreo brand were not seen clear by the attacking journalist. The journalist made a big deal about it how he thought that oreo had secretly asked people to promote their product through YouTube however all the youtube video makers had clearly stated that they were working with the oreo company in the description.I think that this article and issue has been slightly blown out of proportion as youtube can be an informal marketplace, and should not be taken so seriously by some officials.

Ched Evans rape debate: Ofcom to investigate BBC DJ’s comments

Ched Evans Filer

This article speaks about how ofcom are investigating the comments made by a DJ on a radio station which may be seen as offensive in which one of the things he said was women need to keep their knickers on. This is him referring to the Ched Evans case in which Evans was put in jail for allegedly raping a woman and has now been released and wants to come back into football again

I believe what he said was wrong but if he wanted to give his real opinion then he should have because there is no point in lying however what he said was wrong and I believe if something happens to him such as being suspended I believe it would be fair but he has apologized so he knows where he went wrong.

Marxism & Pluralism ''To What Extent..''

Developments in new/digital media mean that audiences can now have access to a greater variety of views and values. To what extent are audiences empowered by these developments?

1)I do agree with Alain de Botton's views on the news to some extent in that the news is changing due to the media, by this I mean that the news is interpreted in different ways due to the media and links in with bias which I also agree with in that most likely there aren't two sided arguments to a news story.I believe that audiences are dis empowered by the developments in new and digital media to a large extent.

2)You can link marxism and hegemony to Alain's criticisms of the news in that that broadcasting programmes such as BBC are bias, are not being fair and may give information that the viewers want this then allows them to get the power over other organisations due to their popularity because they don't not get paid by posting adverts.

3)The news now gives us many different platforms in which we can access the news whether its on the go or at home we can access the news at any time. This also allows us to get news that we want to hear and any type of news such as technology to sport news.

Jennifer Lawrence: 'I will never get Twitter. The internet has scorned me'

jennifer lawrence press

This article is about Jennifer Lawrence stating that she is not active on social media, two months after nude pictures of her were leaked online.

  • In an interview with BBC Radio 1’s Nick Grimshaw, Lawrence was asked by a fan: “Why don’t you have Twitter and will you ever get it?” To which the star emphatically and quickly answered: “I will never get Twitter.” Sitting alongside her co-stars Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson, she elaborated: “I’m not very good on phones or technology. I can not really keep up with emails, so the idea of Twitter is so unthinkable to me. I don’t really understand what it is, it’s this weird enigma that people talk about. And it’s fine, I respect that, but no, I will never get a Twitter. “And if you ever see a Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram that says it’s me; it most certainly is not”.
I think that it is impossible for celebrities to fully avoid social media sites as they will always be a source of entertainment upon these platforms, however because jennifer lawrence is already so popular due to various films being released, she does not necessarily need to keep intact with her fans at the moment because she is almost always in the limelight at the moment. I think that as her career starts to slow down she may start to use social media to maintain a brand image.

Vine shifts from comedy clips to a valid journalistic tool

Alex Thomson Vine
This article is about  Channel 4’s Alex Thomson filmed some emotive Vines about Ebola in Sierra Leone.

  • Vine is mainly used for visual gags and comedy
  • Vines have been used to report on stories from the riots in Ferguson  to and the Scottish referendum to last week’s student protests in London
  • Thomson’s Vines from Sierra Leone caused a stir on Twitter.

I think that this new type of media (apart of Youtube) is finally getting used in a way. This could be great for more updates and breaking news and journalists should make a snapchat too because you can put text on the video or the time.

Marxism, Pluralism and Hegemony

Developments in new/digital media mean that audiences can now have access to a greater variety of views and values. To what extent are audiences empowered by these developments?

Audiences are empowered by user generated content for instance the Nina Gross who has tweeted as BBC question time for talking about the Alice gross story in a political aspect. Nine then tweeted stating for BBC to leave her family alone and allow them to be able to grieve without creating more drama and using the death as a gain in order to change or introduce new changes. BBC then later apologised.

Audiences are dis-empowered through music streaming services such as Spotify, as people like Taylor swift has taken her music of form the streaming service. This links to Marxism as Spotify want to control what audiences are listening to but Taylor Swift has taken her music away. This is limiting the control that spotify have therefore are showing that the power does not lie in big powerful companies.

Audiences are dis-empowered by the likes of YouTube as content creators such as pewdiepie who has controlled and regulated the comment that are made on his video. He has the ability to be able to delete comments or to even block all comments from being made which is what he did. This is an example of how YouTube have given an illusion that the audience have power however this is not true.

Spotify and Uber team up for in-car streaming music

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek.

This article is about customers of smartphone taxi app Uber will soon be able to stream music from Spotify during rides, after the two companies announced a partnership.

  • Uber users who link their Spotify account to their Uber account can basically push a button and get a ride, and get into the car, and in the car their Spotify music, their Spotify station is playing
  • The feature will be available in 10 cities: London, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Nashville, New York, San Francisco, Singapore, Stockholm, Sydney and Toronto
  • Spotify and Uber are holding launch parties on Friday 21 November in those cities, featuring artists including Andrew WK, Professor Green and Diplo.
  • News of the partnership had leaked out over the weekend, after Uber sent invitations to journalists promising “a first-of-its-kind partnership”, complete with an illustration of musical notes.
I don't know if this is going to work as much as Uber and Spotify hope for because not everyone has spotify but Spotify is the leading company when it comes to streaming music .Youtube's new streaming music system comes out (Youtube Key), is this going to work? How would this make artists feel as people use stream to listen favourite songs instead of the radio as new artists produce new music and put on radio.

  • Lots of journalists and the public want Emil Michael fired.
I think that Uber should fire Emil Michael because people are not boycotting the app and at the end of the day Uber is a business that needs to make money.

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/nov/11/spotify-ceo-taylor-swift-albums-daniel-ek
Daniel Ek: ‘The talk swirling around lately about how Spotify is making money on the backs of artists upsets me big time’
This was about the CEO of Spotify making his first comment about the Taylor Swift situation.
  • Spotify chief executive Daniel Ek has responded to Taylor Swift’s decision to remove her albums from the streaming service with a blog post tackling what he describes as the “myths” of streaming music.
  • In his post, Ek announced that Spotify now has 50 million active users, with 12.5 million of them paying for a monthly subscription.
  • He added that Spotify has now paid out more than $2bn in royalties to labels and publishers.
  • Ek also defended Spotify’s “blend” of free and subscription music, with Swift having removed her albums because the company refused to only make them available to its paying subscribers.
  • Ek also claimed that a top artist like Taylor Swift can expect to earn $6 a year from Spotify streams
I think what Taylor Swift and her label did was not clever. They were making a lot of money out of this online streaming system and if they don't like that - well they have too because thats were the music industry has gone to now.

  • The research mainly targeted 12-17 year olds.
  • The research tool 20 years long
  • The study concluded that playing video games coincided with a fall in violent crime perpetrated by those in the 12-17 age group.
  • The research paper also questions the validity of previous studies into links between real-life and screened violence, which have largely relied on laboratory testing.
I think that article makes a lot of sense and this supports new technology which is quite rare in situation like this.

Taylor Swift v Spotify: back catalogue removed from streaming services

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/nov/03/taylor-swift-spotify-artists-discography-streaming-services
Haters gonna hate… Swift performs on
This article was about how Taylor Swift withheld her new album 1989 from music streaming services, and has now removed all her albums from Spotify.

  • Swift and her label Big Machine Music have yet to comment
  • Spotify broke the news in a blog post
  •  Red’s tracks had been played more than 260m times on the service since the album was made available to stream in May 2013, eight months after it first went on sale
  • Spotify have made it cleared that they want her back.
I think that this is very big news to anyone because she is so big in the music industry and nobody still knows why she took away her songs off Spotify, but this is all in the air right now because we haven't heard from Taylor Swift or her Label about this.

  • The chief executive of Facebook-owned virtual reality firm Oculus VR has warned rival Sony not to launch a VR headset until it has solved problems of motion sickness

  • Iribe described VR as a “brand new industry… we’re just at the beginning
  • Oculus boss said that since being bought for $2bn by Facebook earlier in the year, his company has focused on recruitment
I think that motion sickness is a problem that should be held before the headset is released to everyone. I think Sony have the money and resources to fix this problem as quick as possible because people have already seen popular gamers use it on YouTube.

News Values

Immediacy: has it happened recently?
With social networking sites you can now find out the news instantly. So Twitter for e.g. lets you find out news straight away as a tweet gets sent in seconds.

Familiarity: is it culturally close to us in Britain?
Because we are researching local newspapers the majority of the news will be about the borough we live in unless there is breaking national news or even sometimes world wide news.

Amplitude Is it a big event? Does it involve many people?
If it is a big event it will most likely be seen and tweeted by people on twitter. There could be a popular hashtag going around which could be on the top 10 trends. Even now on snapchat with snapchat live it allows people to see the big events happening in the world such a big worldwide concerts for e.g.

Frequency: did the event happen fairly quickly?
if it happened on the day. It would be on online and on twitter straight but newspapers would post about it the next day.

Unambiguity: is it clear and definite?
Newspapers have the tendency to not reveal certain stories if they think that they are too difficult to explain, local newspapers may also adopt this same principle.

Taylor Swift tells fans she's 'watching closely' after UK iTunes unrest

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/oct/15/taylor-swift-uk-itunes-out-of-the-woods

The Article talks about how the UK public have reacted and how Taylor Swift has took on the fact that her new single is out everywhere except the UK .

Taylor Swift says Out of the Woods has deliberately been held back in the UK iTunes Store.
  • In a Tumblr post, Swift confirmed that this was no accident: in fact, it’s a deliberate marketing strategy by her record label.
  • Out of the Woods is likely to be available for at least some of Swift’s fans in the UK soon
  • It is relatively rare to see songs made available to buy on iTunes in some countries but not other major music markets like the UK
My Opinion is that this shouldn't happen and it is bad for Taylor Swift because the UK has one of the biggest music markets in the world and for the single not to be out in the UK is very unprofessional for her and her label.

Build the wall analysis

Section 1:
This section discusses the Washington Post and the New York Times and whether they are doing good with their audience facing paywall.

Section 2:

This section discusses the likelihood of the times moving to a paywall thats actually working.

Section 3:

This section talks about the drop in the industry and it's reasons.

Section 4:

The effects if The Times and The Post were to move to an online basis.

The main point of this article is the issues of newspapers and how they may be more successful if they were to add an online paywall to their websites as this may be the only way how journalists get paid. The article also outlines the likelihood of a paywall actually working if the quality of newspaper is increased.

Commenting On Comments

"The Morton Plan would have kicked in on July 4 but newspapers across the country couldn't get it together by then. Why do newspapers drag their feet? They have seen the future and still they hesitate. "

I agree with as newspapers need to realise that they will not survive by not doing anything and take action straight away.

"I will never pay for news again. Most news is not truly news - it is sensationalism, hype and deception. Most news is not balanced - every editor is biased. And it is not just that - I truly can not afford to pay for news."

Newspapers need to ensure they are not charging more than they should for their content.

"The proof is that while online aggregation and free newspaper Web sites have combined to batter paid print circulation figures, more people are reading the product of America’s newspapers than ever before."

I can infer that this person feels that there is still demand for physical newspapers.

I believe that for journalists they all need to use a pay wall online because only some are getting paid but the firms should find a way to get them all paid.

The article was about Microsoft's new operating software - Windows 10.  It was about how they skipped Windows 9 and went straight to 10. It also spoke about the test, trial Windows 10 that is out tomorrow ( 1/10/14).

  • The new operating system, expected to be released next year, comes three years after the launch of Windows 8.
  • Windows 8 did receive a lot of bad reviews by users.
  • Before the launch, some had speculated the company might signal a new era at Microsoft by dropping the Windows name altogether. Internally the project had been called Threshold.
  • Windows 8 introduced major changes in Microsoft’s operating system
My opinion is that I cant wait for Windows 10 because of the new multi task feature on it. i personally like the name Windows 10 instead of Windows 9 even though by theory they should had called it Windows 9 no matter what.

NDM Essay Question #1 learner response

WWW- There is a good essay foundation here but we need to add a lot to the good examples you use (e.g YouTube)
EBI- You need to focus on the question... use the words in the question to show you are doing this
      - Need for more media issues, debates + theories as well as examples.

LR:
YouTube is a great example of new and digital media. The audience have a lot of control over what they watch and how much they watch. There is also a comment section under every video; which then the audience share thoughts. An example of this is whit a YouTube channel called The Fine Bros where they have a series where they have a bunch of teenagers react to ma video or a object. The Fine Bros, after every video they ask the audience to comment down for what the teens should react to next and the best comment wins and they show who posted the comment in, in the beginning of the video. So the audience feel apart of the video. The series has now have over 3 millions views and counting on each video. Overall the audience  do not have all the power. Google have all the power. Google can block any comment or take away any video. So basically the audience thinks they have all the power but it is just an there for make the audience happy.
