http://www.theguardian.com/media/2015/feb/20/mail-online-gains-17m-unique-browsers-as-newspaper-sites-bounce-back
The Daily mail online recently went past the threshold of 200 million monthly browsers of their content online. Whether this is at the opportunity cots of less readers of their tangible paper and more of the digital counterpart is debateable. However, this does highlight the fact that news firms adopting digital tactics is beneficial in the long term as proved by this article as their demographic are becoming more and more technology literate.

This article supports the argument that print is still the dominant superpower in the media today. This can therefore show and supports the argument that the decline of the newspaper industry may be overstated that what will necessarily occur. As a result, the effect that new and digital media has on the newspaper industry may also be severely overstated.

Identities and the Media: Feminism

What are the two texts the article focuses on?

The two texts is the TV show Pan Am and also Beyonce's music video for her song why don't you love me.

What examples are provided from the two texts of the 'male gaze' (Mulvey)?

One example is"fragmented legs as they walk in unison through the airport" . The second example is "with a face like that you will find a husband in a couple of months" .

Do texts such as these show there is no longer a need for feminism or are they simply sexism in a different form?

I think that their saying that this is now a post feminism state by making themselves look like role models to women.

Choose three words/phrases from the glossary of the article and write their definitions on your blog.

Post-feminism – An ideology in culture and society that society is somehow past needing feminism and that the attitudes and arguments of feminism are no longer needed.

Patriarchy – An ideology that places men in a dominant position over women.

Feminism – A movement aimed at defining, establishing, and defending women’s rights and equality to men.

No More Page 3

Research the No More Page 3 campaign. Who started it and why?

Lucy Holmes started the campaign in the summer of 2014 where she kept saying the fact the only full page representation of woman was a sex object.

What are the six reasons the campaign gives for why Page 3 has to go?

  1. Bad teachings for children
  2. It is 2015, page 3 was made in the sexist times, 1970's.
  3. The Sun could be better without page 3
  4. Soft porn, families can look at that.
  5. Showing that women are only needed for sexual needs
  6. Women are known for doing better things in the world

Read this debate in the Guardian regarding whether the campaign should be dropped. What are Barbara Ellen and Susan Boniface's contrasting opinions in the debate?

Boniface believes the sun should no longer have page three as we do not live in the past anymore and now men and women are equal.

Barbara argues that being in page 3 is a decision that the women have chosen to participate in page 3 to show that women are equal and can do anything.

How can the No More Page 3 campaign be linked to the idea of post-feminism?

It can be Linked with post feminism as they can say that we have moved on and that we now live in a post- feminism state.

What are your OWN views on the No More Page 3 campaign. Do you agree with the campaign's aims? Should the campaign continue?

I agree with the campaign for the removal of page 3. It will help children grown up in a equal world and plus to take the next step towards a fully post-feminism state.

Do you agree that we are in a post-feminist state or is there still a need for feminism?

I believe that there is still a need for feminism to show a equal world.

Post-colonialism: blog task

1)

Fanon - "putting on the white mask"
Alvarado - 4 representation of black people.
Said - East vs West, uncivilized vs civilized

2)

One example is that how the dirty man used a finger to eat peanut butter over a spoon , another way is through the way the tea was cooked. Yasmin on the other hand shows the clash between east vs west, this is done through how she changes clothes when going work and when she is in the community she dresses differently.
